Get ready for more Tweets from mom and dad; a new Harris Decima poll shows older Canadians are embracing social media as a way to stay in touch with their loved ones.
Two years ago, 39 per cent of Canadians over 50 were clicking “like” and uploading their photos to social networking sites.
Those numbers have now jumped to 57 per cent.
Social media expert Tom Vassos tells 660News he expects those numbers to grow in the coming years.
“It’s where their younger loved ones are participating, posting videos and things, and people want to connect with them,” he says.
The social expert says the sites are becoming very easy to use, which is attracting many people to the networking trend.
Facebook is still the number one choice for most in the older demographic.
Vassos adds it’s a new era for the site that was only being used on college campuses just a few years ago.
“Their penetration of almost 97 per cent of users is just phenomenal,” he says. “And they’re just continuing onward and upward with all age categories really growing as their friends draw them into that world.”
Two years ago, almost all of respondents under the age of 25 had jumped aboard the social media bandwagon.
Growth among Twitter users has also been remarkable with one in four now using the instant messaging site, compared to only two per cent in 2009.
