The City of Calgary’s first-ever Snow Event has ended just over 24 hours after it began.
The Snow Route parking ban was put into effect at 2 p.m. on Sunday December 4th, and lifted at 6 p.m. on Monday December 5th.
The City says the purpose of the program is to support snow plowing operations by removing vehicles from the streets, allowing crews to clear snow from Calgary roads more efficiently and effectively.
Snow Events are put into place when five centimetres of snow accumulates on Calgary roads, and can restrict parking on designated ‘Snow Routes’ for up to 72 hours.
Parking Authority GM Troy McLeod says most Calgarians cooperated with the parking ban.
“We had over 80 per cent of Calgarians who moved their vehicles out of the way so road staff could do their work. We want to thank them for doing that,” said McLeod.
However, there were many who didn’t. McLeod says by 4:30 p.m. on Monday 3,291 warning notices were handed out to vehicles parked on snow routes throughout the city.
The city also updated snow plowing progress, saying they plan to get to residential roads later this week.
