Deadly fentanyl use on the rise in Calgary

A deadly, small light-coloured pill has local authorities warning users about the sometimes mistaken street drug.

The Calgary Police Service and Alberta Health Services say the use of fentanyl is on the rise in Calgary.

The main concern is with fentanyl’s potency as it can be up to 100 times more toxic than morphine.

The drug is often passed off as oxycontin, a drug available by prescription.

Fentanyl was seized 36 times last year by police, with the largest bust containing 9,600 pills.

Since January, there have been 13 seizures with one consisting of nearly 11,600 pills.

In the past two years, there have been 50 deaths in which fentanyl was at a contributing factor.
