City keeps mosquito numbers under control

At this time of year many Calgarians are usually fighting off those dreaded mosquitos, however so far this year that hasn’t been the case.
Our city has received a lot of rain over the last month or so, which mosquitos need to lay eggs, but it wasn’t enough to allow them to hatch.
The City’s James Borrow tells the Herald, mosquitoes are a species that typically lay eggs around the edges of ponds, and they will lay dormant until the water reaches them.
He says all the moisture we’ve received has fallen on very dry ground and it was not enough to fill the soil, and create any good surface moisture.
As a result, the city has also been able to gain an upper hand on their spraying program to kill the mosquitos before they leave the larvae stage and Borrow says the goal now is to keep the numbers to a minimum throughout the summer.
