Cyber security experts say new cases of “disaster fraud” are popping up every day with internet scammers spamming our in-boxes with urgent plees for aid, be it for Haitian earthquake victims or for people stranded by volcanic ash.
A Calgary security analyst tells 660News the fraudsters are quick and they’re very good at seeing the ebb and flow surrounding the news of the day, with emails circulating already, claiming a need for cash because of the volcano in Iceland.
Calgary police Constable Cathy MacDonald says we should make it a rule of thumb not to reply to any unsolicited emails and also avoid clicking on any links that may contain.
Instead, she recommends seeking out a reputable charity if you want to help out.
