The brand new Louise Fire Station is now open in Calgary’s downtown core and some officials say it is just in time.
For one, Mayor Dave Bronconnier says it’s not a moment too soon.
“The population growth for the people living in the west end of the downtown, which is expected to increase by some 60 per cent over the next 25 years, in addition to the employment growth in the downtown, two fire stations in the downtown is just not enough,” he says.
Calgary’s Fire Chief Bruce Burrell says not only was the timing crucial but location was also a key.
They’ve now relocated their Aquatics Rescue Team because of the prime position of the new station.
“We go out the door, we turn right and we’re basically down at the boat launch in about 40 seconds,” he says.
The new fire hall is part of a larger complex that is also home to a new affordable housing development.
