Conrad Black’s conviction has been set aside by the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Court has set aside three mail fraud convictions against former Canadian media baron Conrad Black.
The court has left ultimate resolution of the case to a lower appeals court, which means Black has not been exonerated in the case.
The Black ruling was handed down alongside a ruling on former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling in limiting the use of a federal fraud law that has been a favourite of white-collar crime prosecutors.
The ruling sets aside a federal appeals court decision that had upheld Black’s honest services fraud conviction.
Black is serving a 6 1/2-year prison sentence in Florida on the mail fraud convictions and an obstruction of justice conviction that is responsible for much of his time in jail.
