Festival to close Memorial Drive again

It could be the most controversial Sunday afternoon festival in the city’s history and it’s back again in 2010 for a second year.

The Bow River Flow is set to go down on Sunday August 22nd between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

It’ll see Memorial Drive reduced from four lanes to two between 9th Street and 4th Street NW.

City council members argued bitterly over the closures last year, with Ward 12’s Ric McIver accusing Alderman Druh Farrell of being short sighted for proposing the festival.

Organizers will stretch the 2010 festival across the Bow river into Prince’s Island Park after around 4,000 people showed up last year.

Co-ordinator Gerald Wheatley tells 660News the Memorial Drive road closures shouldn’t cause any big problems for Sunday afternoon drivers.

“The Roads Department was really careful in looking at that last year,” he says. “The lane reduction showed that there wasn’t queuing or backed up vehicles.”

The event is free and focuses on fitness, music and art. Those attending will be able to take in some live music, laughter yoga or bike polo, among other activities.
