The Stampeders are marking a big milestone Sunday – the 50th anniversary kickoff at McMahon Stadium.
The building, which cost $1-million back when it was built, opened to its first game on August 15th, 1960, with a seating capacity of 19,536.
The stadium was built in just 103 days.
It’s named for George and Frank McMahon, the brothers who financed the project.
According to www.stampeders.com, the pair put up $300,000 in cash and guaranteed another $700,000 if necessary. It was, but the mortgage was burned about a dozen years afterward.
Now, $32-million dollars in upgrades later, McMahon stadium seats more than 36,000 fans.
The Stamps play host to the Eskimos Sunday. Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m.
