A Canadian recruiting firm has some good news for business in 2013, along with some challenges.
In a survey by Hays Specialist Recruitment Canada, 62 per cent of Canadian companies expect activity to increase, but skills and candidate shortages will remain as ongoing problems.
Hays Canada President Rowan O’Grady said companies have to do more for the future rather than focusing on profits for right now.
“In the short term it’s about investing in the people that you have,” he said. “Making sure that you’re putting the investment into training, career development, one-to-one coaching so that each individual person in the company feels like they’re valued.”
O’Grady added another key is competent immigration strategies.
“How easy is it for companies to actually bring the right people in from overseas to get their jobs filled?” he said. “The real long-term one is, are the employees working closely enough with the colleges and the universities to make sure what they’re actually teaching is going to make them an employable candidate.”
The Hays study says 34 per cent of companies expect the economy to strengthen in six to 12 months, while 55 per cent believe it will remain static.
The survey also finds 35 per cent of companies expect permanent staff levels to increase in 2013, with more than half saying they will stay the same.
