Calgary Fieldhouse project inches closer to development

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — UPDATE: The Foothills advisory committee endorsed the recommendations from the city manager including a $19 million dollar request to proceed with the design phase of the project.

The committee in charge of the Foothills Fieldhouse will decide whether to get behind recommendations from the City manager before it’s sent to city council for review.

Among the recommendations in the report drafted by the office of the city manager are endorsing Foothills Athletic Park Redevelopment Advisory Committee’s work plan and approving a capital budget request.

According to the report, the $19 million request is required to proceed with the design phase of the project. The report proposes funding the money using off-site levies — charges that developers pay to the city to help with the cost of off-site infrastructure.

In April, city staff conducted one-on-one meetings with stakeholders including the University of Calgary, McMahon Stadium Society and Sport Calgary to explore avenues for collaboration. In terms of risk, the report warned that should the funding be denied it could jeopardize any future opportunities to partner with the City of Calgary as well as additional funding.

Since the committee was established in January, it’s been working to turn the Fieldhouse into a reality, since the concept was floated over 50 years ago.

The committee’s mandate includes developing a work plan and presenting a budget proposal and preparing an engagement strategy.
