Two RCMP officers face charges following deadly shooting

WHITECOURT (660 NEWS) – ASIRT has laid charges against two RCMP officers who were involved in a fatal shooting that took place two years ago.

In July of 2018, a 31-year-old man was shot and killed while at a rest stop just west of Whitecourt.

A day before the shooting happened, police were looking for one person in connection with a shooting investigation.

On July 3, RCMP found one man asleep in the driver’s seat of a car. Shortly thereafter the car began moving and that is when a confrontation started.

Both officers began shooting at the car, and the vehicle ended up in a ditch a short time later.

The man was identified as 31-year-old Clayton Crawford.

Last week, Constable Jessica Brown and Corporal Randy Stenger were arrested and charged with criminal negligence causing death.

Both are set to appear in court on July 14.

Susan Hughson, ASIRT’s Executive Director says it is the first time in their history that they have had to lay charges against police officers in a fatal shooting.

Hughson says video evidence played a huge part in their investigation.
