The Canadian Federation of Business is hoping to shine a light on excessive regulation for small businesses during Red Tape Awareness Week.
The CFIB says small businesses consistently report the paper burden that comes from cutting through red tape is the second most important issue facing them.
Laura Jones with the CFIB says Canadian business owners pay $31-billion a year on regulation which costs 45 per cent more per employee then in the United States.
This year, the organization is calling on Canadians to sign an online petition, encouraging politicians to take action on reducing “hidden tax” on jobs.
The CFIB says entrepreneurs are at a competitive disadvantage because they typically do not have the funds to hire lawyers, accountants and other professionals to deal with red tape.
Tuesday they plan to release a report card on each province and how accountable they are when it comes to regulations.
