Balzac Billy to decide early spring or long winter

Pennsylvania has Punxsutawney Phil, Ottawa has Wiarton Willey and here in Southern Alberta we have Balzac Billy.

It’s Groundhog Day and the prairie prognosticator will be emerging from his burrow this morning and if he doesn’t see his shadow it will be an early spring!

The Balzac Business Community Association’s Steven Neubauer says Billy attracts visitors from all over.

“Pretty much from the surrounding areas Balzac, Airdrie, Calgary, um but, we do get calls from all over western Canda, it was announced in the maritimes last year or so…”

Balzac Billy who’s actually a “human-sized” squirrel, will emerge from his burrow at the Blue Grass Nursery & Garden Centre just after 8 a.m. Saturday.

There’s also a free pancake breakfast and live entertainment starting at 7a.m..

Ontario’s Wiarton Willy and Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil both didn’t see their shadow: calling for an early spring, while Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam is calling for six more weeks of winter.
