‘A promise made is a promise kept’: Jeromy Farkas declines pension, transition allowance

Jeromy Farkas is sticking to a promise he made when he was first elected as councillor in Ward 11.

The outgoing councillor has declined the city’s pension and transition allowance.

In 2017, Farkas said he wouldn’t be taking either and says “a promise made is a promise kept.”

In a release, Farkas says that between 2007 and 2016, Calgary taxpayers contributed $6.1 million towards the council pension plan, while members of council only contributed $1.2 million.

“This works out to taxpayers contributing about $5 for every dollar put in by council members,” Farkas said.

According to Farkas, the cost of declining the “golden pension” works out to more than $290,000.
