In 2017, Farkas said he wouldn’t be taking either and says “a promise made is a promise kept.”
In a release, Farkas says that between 2007 and 2016, Calgary taxpayers contributed $6.1 million towards the council pension plan, while members of council only contributed $1.2 million.
“This works out to taxpayers contributing about $5 for every dollar put in by council members,” Farkas said.
According to Farkas, the cost of declining the “golden pension” works out to more than $290,000.
