Four children are fighting for their lives in hospital in what RCMP are calling a “horrific” overnight crash west of Lethbridge.
Emergency crews were called to the Highway 3 and Highway 3A interchange, about 20 kilometres west of Lethbridge, just after midnight Wednesday for reports of a head-on collision.
Crews arrived to find a white vehicle on fire with front end damage and a 2024 Nissan Sentra with significant front end damage.
The driver of the white vehicle, a woman from Calgary, was taken to hospital in non-life-threatening injuries. Three children from the same family aged 16, 13, and 9, were rushed to hospital in critical condition.
“Witnesses who pulled up just after the collision had occurred actually pulled the occupants of that vehicle to safety,” says RCMP spokesperson Gina Slaney.
The driver of the Nissan, a man from Lethbridge, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His 7-year-old son was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
There is no word on the cause of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
Highway 3 was closed in the area for several hours in the area but it has since reopened.
