Police are investigating after a home was set on fire in northwest Calgary and several neighbours reported receiving threatening letters.
Emergency crews were called to a fire at a house in the Hillhurst community near 8 Avenue and 17 Street NW around 3:10 a.m. Tuesday.
Fire crews were able to quickly put out the fire. No injuries were reported and the damage to the home was minor, according to police.
Investigators deemed the fire suspicious and Calgary police now say they believe it was set on purpose.
Police also say several neighbours reported getting threatening letters left on their front steps. The notes allegedly asked for residents to send bitcoin transfers.
Investigators say a number of similar arsons took place in Edmonton in September and October. Police are trying to determine if there is a connection.
Police are asking for security footage from the Hillhurst, Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill and West Hillhurst neighbourhoods between 1 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.
