Calgary oil and gas well manufacturing company fined in 2023 worker injury

By CityNews Staff

A Calgary oil and gas well manufacturing company has admitted it failed to provide adequate protections in 2023 workplace incident that seriously hurt one of its employees.

Steelhaus Technologies Inc. pleaded guilty in a Calgary court room on July 30 to one count of failing to provide safeguards if a worker could come into contact with moving parts of equipment or machinery under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code.

The company was fined $125,000 including a 20 per cent victim fine surcharge. The Crown withdrew eight other counts.

The charges stem from an incident at the company’s Calgary manufacturing facility on May 27, 2023, where a worker was seriously hurt while using a computer numerical control lathe to do finishing polishing work.

Both the company and the Crown have 30 days to appeal the conviction or the penalties.
