Ice plant leak at SE Calgary arena prompts response from fire department

By CityNews Staff

No one was hurt following an ammonia leak at a southeast Calgary arena Monday thanks to fast-acting staff and a solid emergency response plan.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says it was called around 7:15 to the Jack Setters Arena on 69 Avenue SE, in the community of Lynnwood.

When firefighters got there, they found patrons and staff evacuating the city as per its protocol.

No injuries were reported. The CFD credits the fast-acting staff, saying they quickly and accurately followed their emergency response plan.

After everyone was out of the building, CFD Hazmat technicians suited up and went inside. They isolated the leak and started to ventilate the building.

Crews worked with the facilities refrigeration contract to ensure that the system was made safe while further repairs are planned.

Seven fire vehicles and 18 firefighters attended the scene alongside Hazmat crews.
