New research says wearing a helmet does nothing to prevent a concussion.
At an international panel led by University of Calgary physicians, the consensus was helmets and mouth guards protect athletes from trauma injuries like a fractured skull, but there’s nothing to suggest that they stop concussions.
The panel of 30 experts is now providing guidelines on evaluating and treating concussions during sporting events.
The group recommends rule changes aimed at preventing concussions in sports would be a better strategy.
The researchers also suggest extended rest may not be the best approach to recovery.
