‘Grandparent scam’ suspect disguised as EPS officer identified by Calgary police

A suspect who disguised himself as an Edmonton police detective and reportedly stole nearly $5,000 in a “grandparent scam” in March is wanted by Calgary police.

Officers say it happened on March 23 when a man contacted a woman in the 100-200 block of Tuscany Ride Close NW.

They say the suspect, who claimed to be her grandson, was in jail in Edmonton and needed bail money.

The victim then withdrew $4,900 from her bank account and called the suspect with the number he provided.

Investigators then say he arrived at the victim’s home pretending to be an Edmonton Police Service detective, and then took the money.

Police describe the suspect as a man between 30 and 40 years old, 5’10” tall, with black hair and a beard.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
