Calgary Housing opens 16 new affordable homes in NW Calgary

Calgary has added 16 new affordable homes in the city’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.
The development was officially opened on Wednesday with a ribbon‑cutting attended by city, provincial and federal officials.
City leaders say the project is an early example of Calgary Housing’s expanded role in speeding up the construction and occupancy of affordable units.
Interim president Bo Jiang said the organization is aiming to deliver 4,500 new affordable homes over the next decade, noting the agency is “well on track” toward that goal.
Ward 7 Coun. Myke Atkinson, who lives nearby, said the new homes will strengthen the neighbourhood.
“Mount Pleasant will also benefit when these 16 families move in, and they start giving back adding to the vibrancy of this community,” he said.
The development carries an $8.9 million construction budget, including $5.4 million from the City of Calgary, with additional funding from the provincial and federal governments.
Nathan Neudorf, Alberta’s minister responsible for assisted living and social services, and Corey Hogan, MP for Calgary Confederation, were among those on hand for the opening.
Jiang said Calgary Housing’s growth strategy relies on a mix of building, buying and partnering.
“Show us the money, show us the partnership, show us the skill and we’ll step up and be there,” said Jiang.
The new units include one, two, and three bedroom homes equipped with heat pumps and solar panels to reduce long‑term operating costs. Rents range from $700 to $1,800 per month, and the first tenants are expected to move in within two weeks.
