Calgary landfill blaze under control says fire department

At approximately 6 pm Sunday evening, the Calgary fire department responded to calls for a large fire on the east side of the Ecco recycling landfill in the city’s SE.

A landfill fire that was potentially casting acrid smoke over a number of southeast Calgary neighborhoods was under control as of Monday night, says the city’s fire department.

The fire was initially dealt with Sunday with fire crews responding at about 6 p.m. to the ECCO Recycling site in southeast Calgary.

However, officials say the incident was controlled as of Monday night with ECCO staff taking over monitoring and work to maintain the site, following a battle that involved the city, the province, and the company.

“(Fire) crews maintained continuous suppression operations at the site with the assistance of City of Calgary Waste and Recycling.. contractors.. Alberta Environment and employees of ECCO,” a news release states.

The fire department raised concerns Monday of potential for smoke from the fire causing irritation among residents in a number of southeast neighborhoods.

But in a later update, they said smoke had been “reduced significantly and there is no longer a plume drifting into adjacent communities. The cooperation of citizens has been pivotal during this operation and conditions should return to normal.”

There is no word on the cause of the fire.
