Alberta legislature passes rare private members bill

It took almost three years, but a private members bill aimed at curbing thefts at job sites across the province is on it’s way to becoming a law.

Sherwood Park – Strathcona PC MLA Dave Quest hopes bill 201 will become law sometime this summer.

Under the bill people looking to sell scrap metal or wire will have to provided proper identification before they are paid.

People who are caught trying to unload stolen items will be slapped with hefty fines starting at $5000.00 and the fine for a second offence is $15,000.00 or one year in jail.

Quest tells 660News jurisdictions that already have similar laws on the books report construction site thefts have dropped dramatically.
