Ex-MRU student prez takes back guilty plea

The former student union president at Mount Royal University is trying to withdraw a guilty plea for fraud.

Meghan Melnyk pleaded guilty last summer to cashing a bad cheque which was reportedly stolen.

Melnyk testified Thursday her lawyer told her to plead guilty to all charges against her, which include robbing a financial institution, being disguised and breaching probation.

But The Calgary Sun reports the 29-year-old claims she got the cheque from a woman who purchased her laptop through Kijiji.

Melnyk admits to robbing a credit union in February 2012, indicating to the teller she was armed.

Her sentencing hearing has been delayed to June 7th.
