A new partnership has been struck to divert waste away from city landfills, following big events like a Stampede breakfast.
Green Calgary is teaming up with London Drugs to help the Rocky Ridge Royal Oak Community Association with its annual July western pancake flip.
Last year, some 2,000 people took in the event, leaving behind a mountain of garbage that took almost two weeks to clean-up.
The Executive Director of Green Calgary, Patricia Cameron, tells 660News they are looking at using reusable plates this year, while setting up water stations along with recycling and compost bins.
Green Calgary will conduct a waste audit on July 6th hoping to create a model for future events.
Cameron is encouraging other community groups looking to reduce their own carbon footprint to give Green Calgary a call.
Each year over a two-week period, in conjunction with Stampede, breakfast is served up at hundreds of parties; the largest feeding attracts 65,000 revellers alone.
