Three hundred people have been forced out of their southwest apartment building and they won’t be able to return for at least another day.
A large electrical surge from a new transformer in the building is being blamed for starting a series of small fires in the Mayfair Place apartments at 6707 Elbow Drive.
The two alarm fire started at around 7:30 a.m. in the 15 storey building and created a lot of smoke and plenty of panic in the building.
Some residents in the building are physically disabled and were unable to leave their floor. Firefighters protected them on scene from any potential danger.
Paramedics treated three people outside the building, but no one was taken to hospital. Calgary Transit provided buses for the displaced residents.
The Fire Department’s Disaster Services has set up a reception centre for residents at the Calgary Jewish Academy.
