The leading contenders to be Calgary’s next mayor are ramping up their campaigns by making a long list of promises.
Craig Burrows said he’d freeze salaries for aldermen. Joe Connelly plans to go to Calgarians to find $60 million in savings in the current budget.
Front runner Ric McIver would do away with the three dollar park and ride fee and get the Calgary Parking Authority to cut rates, and Naheed Nenshi outlined a ‘ten year plan’ to reduce poverty.
Barb Higgins said Calgary’s transit system needs to be improved. She called for more bus shelters, saying Calgary is a winter city and seniors shouldn’t be standing out in the cold.
Most of the 15 mayoralty contenders also talked about senior’s issues during a forum downtown Tuesday afternoon at the Kerby Centre.
Wayne Stewart says he wants to be the voice for seniors and on his “to-do list” is approving granny suites so that seniors are able to live with their adult children.
About 250 people attended the forum.
