Subcontractor pleads guilty

A subcontractor has pleaded guilty to site safety charges laid by the City of Calgary.

The charges stem from a December 15, 2009 incident where a drill bit fell 20 storeys from a construction site in downtown Calgary located at 112 9 Ave SW.

The bit hit the hood of a vehicle below.

“Owners, contractors and subcontractors are responsible for taking whatever actions are appropriate to protect the public in and around construction sites,” says Kevin Griffiths, Chief Building Official, City of Calgary. “In this case, there was evidence that the subcontractor did not have the necessary controls in place to prevent the drill bit from falling.”

Toro Aluminium Railings Inc. was fined $5,000 and a victim surcharge.
