Support centres bracing to help those in mental distress after flood

Local support centre workers say the mental distress isn’t over for many people after June’s flood.
While the floodwaters are long gone, Wayne Steer, director of the Fresh Start Recovery Centre, says many victims are just coming to terms with the state of their homes and finances.
Steer says the Calgary-based centre is well-prepared to help those who may be coping with their depression with drinking or drugs.
He tells The Calgary Herald disasters like these can often be a trigger point for substance abuse.
Steer explains it raises alarm bells for the 2,700 people still displaced after the flood who may be dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder.
