The father of a newborn baby found in a dumpster this week will get to see his child in hospital for the first time Thursday. He also says he plans to fight for custody of the infant.
The father is the person who actually rescued the baby from a N.W. dumpster after hearing the newborn crying.
Police say child abandonment cases like this are rare in Calgary.
But criminologists say there are several reasons something like this can happen. The mother could be unwilling to raise the child, be in denial about the whole thing, or not realize she was pregnant.
That’s according to the University of Winnipeg’s Kirsten Kramar. She tells The Calgary Herald typically when mothers place a baby in the trash they are trying to hide the situation.
They may panic and fear how her partner would react to a baby.
She says they’re not trying to harm the infant, just do away with the problem.
