Flu shot numbers up in Calgary

More Calgarians are rolling up their sleeves to get their flu shots.

Alberta Health Services says it’s vaccinated about 75,000 people in Calgary since the flu clinics were rolled out just after Thanksgiving.

That’s compared to 48,000 people at the same time last year during the height of the H1N1 scare.

Alberta Health says it’s learned from last year’s massive H1N1 clinic line-ups and made things better.

“This year we have tried to our best to make vaccine clinics more accessible,” Dr. Judy MacDonald with Alberta Health says. “We’re trying to manage those lines as best we can and I think we’ve been successful to date.”

MacDonald says she’s pleased with the turnout so far, but adds that the flu season hasn’t really begun yet and it’s coming quick, with lots of people in Calgary still to vaccinate.
