The Calgary Fire Department warmly welcomes Gibbs to their investigation team as part of their Accelerant Detection Canine Program.
Gibbs is a 21-month-old American Black Labrador who completed training this summer and will be a new teammate for Honey.
Handler and fire investigator Tony Bund tells 660News, the dog will sniff out accelerants in a purposely-set fire.
He says, “Based on the handler’s commands, he will go through there in a “seek” fashion and we work from an area of unburned burnt, typically, to find out if there’s anything in there that’s suspicious and out of place, as far as accelerants go.”
Bund adds when Gibbs detects something, he’ll point and sit and then be rewarded with food.
Out of the more than 120 fires that have been investigated, the dogs have had 96 accelerant hits!
