Cold temperature relief is around the corner

Cold temperatures and a wind chill warning remain in place in Calgary and much of the rest of Southern and Central Alberta Saturday morning, but there is some relief coming.

Temperatures are expected to rise starting Saturday afternoon and overnight according to Environment Canada Meteorologist Heather Smith.

“Temperatures will continue continue to rise through the next few days, so this should be the last day of extreme wind chills,” says Smith.

However, those wind chill warnings are expected to stay in place until around noon Saturday.

“We’re seeing wind chills near minus 40 this morning,” says Smith. “Generally, in Alberta, we’re seeing wind chills between minus 40 and minus 50.”

According to Environment Canada, exposed skin can suffer frost bite in under five minutes in those conditions.

For those who despise the cold, the good news is by Monday, Calgary should be back to seasonal temperatures of around minus 4.

It’s still somewhat chilly until then. Environment Canada’s Saturday morning forecast says Calgary will have a high of minus 25 Saturday, and minus 16 Sunday.
