It’s a rivalry that goes back to 1989, when the Flames beat the Montreal Canadiens in game six of the Stanley Cup Finals.
On May 25, 1989 Lanny McDonald tied it up at two, then Doug Gilmour scored the series-winning goal.
Now 21 years later, some of the same players are tugging on their jerseys to face off at the Heritage Classic Alumni Game at McMahon Stadium.
Former Flames including Jamie Macoun, Perry Berezan and Al MacInnis are preparing to square off against old time foes Rick Green, Mike Keane and Russ Courtnall.
Theoren Fleury was still a rookie when he hoisted the Stanley Cup in 1989 and he tells 660News although the main goal of Saturday’s alumni game is to have fun, old rivalries die hard.
“The intention first is probably to have fun, but I know once the puck is dropped, there’s a lot of competitive guys on our side and there’s a lot of competitive guys on their side, so I’m sure it’ll end up turning into a really competitive game,” he says.
Fleury says he’s looking forward to playing with all of the guys.
“We all share a special bond together, and that’s the Stanley Cup and obviously we were a part of the Flames organization when we did that, so it’s always great to put on that jersey,” he says.
He adds he can’t wait to lace up the skates at McMahon Stadium.
“To be able to play outdoors in front of a big crowd, it’s great to be a part of that,” says Fleury.
