Transit fares going up in 2010

Your wallet or purse is going to start feeling a lot lighter when you take the bus next month.

The fares for Calgary Transit are going up, effective January 1st.

Adults will now have to pay an extra $0.25, with a single ride costing $2.75.

Alderman Brian Pincott, who sits on the Land Use, Planning and Transportation Committee, says the reason for the increase is to meet demand.

Pincott says more and more people use transit during these tough times and they need to keep service at least at par.

“If we were to remove a fare increase, we would end up scaling back service even more. We have heard pretty significantly from Calgarians that they don’t want the transit service scaled back,” Pincott tells 660News.

The hike isn’t a snap judgement. It was decided in the November 2008 budget. We just weren’t reminded about it, until it was recently posted on the transit website.

This increase means our adult fares are even with Toronto and Montreal, who both have underground train systems.

It also pushes us ahead of Vancouver and Edmonton by $0.25 per ride.

The change are as follows:

                             Old        New
Adult Fare:         $2.50        $2.75

Adult Book of 10:    $23.00        $24.00

Adult Monthly Pass:    $83.00        $85.25

Adult Day Pass:    $7.50        $8.25

Dogs:            $2.50        $2.75
