Fridge explodes in Northeast Calgary house

It’s being described as being as loud as an exploding artillery shell.

However, the blast that sent shockwaves through a neighbourhood in the community of Rundle Tuesday afternoon was from an exploding refrigerator.

Police, fire and EMS crews swarmed the scene after getting calls about the explosion.

A man in the home was not seriously hurt.

Police say he had been asleep on the main floor of the bungalow when the fridge blew up.

People in the basement ran upstairs to discover a mangled fridge, extensive damage and food all over the place.

A nearby homeowner tells 660News the blast was so loud he thought it was the furnace exploding in his basement.

He then ran outside and saw that the windows had been blown out of his neighbour’s house.

He says he hasn’t heard a blast like that since he was in the army.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the explosion.
