Olympic Torch to light up Calgary in coming weeks

Almost 22 years after it burned brightly in Calgary, the Olympic flame will be back in our city in less than two weeks, as part of the 106 day Torch relay.

The Olympic flame will arrive in Calgary late in the afternoon on January 18th.

Today, the Mayor and three-time Olympic speed-skating medalist Susan Auch will release more details about what celebrations are planned.

We do know that a big party is scheduled at Canada Olympic Plaza across from City Hall.

Calgarians are invited out to enjoy all kinds of live entertainment between 5:00 p.m. and 10 p.m that night.

The Olympic flame itself is scheduled to be there at 7:00 p.m.

On January 19th, the Torch relay will make stops in a number of centres around Calgary, including Airdrie, Crossfield , Strathmore and Chestermere.

Another event is planned at Canada Olympic Park on January 20th, before the Torch Relay heads west into the Rockies.

The Vancouver / Whistler Olympics begin February 12th, 2010.
