The U-S Consul General for Alberta has met for the first time ever with the Muslim Council of Calgary.
The MCC represents about 60,000 mainstream Muslims.
The organization’s Kashif Ahmed tells 660News, meetings like the one Wednesday afternoon are imperative to breaking down the barriers.
“Particularly after Nine-Eleven and in the wake of recent incidents that happened in December, there continue to be misconceptions and misunderstanding about the Muslim community, often reaching to the level of fear mongering.”
Laura Lochman visited the Akram Jomaa Islamic Centre to learn about the Muslim community.
Lochman took over the Consul General post in June. To Ahmed’s knowledge, but no Consul General has ever formally met with their community in Calgary.
