WestJet is warning the cost for increased security at Canada’s airports could be passed on to consumers.
44 full body scanners are being installed at Canada’s major airports, including YYC. The price tag for each machine is $250,000 and that doesn’t include the cost for additional staff to run them.
Gregg Saretsky, executive vice-president of operations for WestJet tells 660News, the cost to pay for the increased security will possibly come from the consumer through an increased fee on airline tickets, the airline itself, or the federal government.
He says it could also include a combination of all three parties paying.
The new measures were put in place after the failed bombing attempt on December 25, aboard a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
