Watcheston admits to killing Arcelie Laogan

A strange start to the first degree murder trial for 24-year-old Christopher Watcheston.

The man’s lawyers admitted their client sexually assaulted and caused the injuries that killed 41-year-old Arcelie Laogan, but a ‘not guilty’ plea was entered in the charge of first degree murder.

The Crown says the two issues for the judge to decide are whether Watcheston had the intent to commit murder and whether it was done during the commission of a sexual assault, which automatically carries a first degree murder charge.

Laogan, a mother of five, was on her way home when she was attacked and killed in January of 2008.

Her badly beaten body was discovered near the Franklin LRT station.
