More people migrating away from Alberta

More people are saying goodbye to Alberta.

In the fourth quarter of 2009, nearly three thousand people left the province. It represents the highest net outflow in more than 20 years.

People are still heading west though.

Alberta’s overall population rose slightly by 0.2 per cent to 3.7 million people.

University of Calgary Economist Dr. Frank Atkins tells 660News that if you’ve been living here for a while, it shouldn’t be a surprise why so many are taking off for greener pastures.

“We have a very boom and bust economy here, as any resource-based economy does,” he says. “When we’re booming, an awful lot of people come here looking for jobs and when we’re slumping, these people who came here in the boom times are going back to where they came from.”

He says Alberta isn’t bearing the fruits it once was.

He adds it may be a while before we see these migration numbers change course because the economy needs to fully recover first and that could take another year or two.
