Calgary dogcatchers lobby for tranquilizer guns

The city’s bylaw department is looking for permission to tranquilize loose pets.

Dogcatchers want to be able to use sleep inducing dart guns to catch pets on the lam.

Bylaw boss Bill Bruce tells 660News they only want to use the tranquilizer in a very specific situation when dogs are running around on busy high speed roads.

Bruce says the animal control officers would have to determine the dosage of the tranquilizer dart based on the pet’s weight and then be ready with the antidote once the animal is subdued.

Calgary’s bylaw department has already been in contact with American cities in Ohio, Arizona and California that use tranquilizer dart guns.

Bruce says the next step is to start talks in order to get the necessary approvals from Alberta Fish and Wildlife and the province’s solicitor general.
