Suicide bombers rock Moscow’s Metro

At least 37 people are dead and more than 100 others are injured following two separate terrorist attacks on Moscow’s subway system.

Two female suicide bombers blew themselves up during the height of the morning rush.

One of the blasts was at the Lubyanka station, which is right below the main offices of the Federal Security Service and the former home of the KGB.

The other blast happened about 45 minutes later at the Park Kultry station, which is near Russia’s main news agency, including its English language TV station.

Officials believe the bombers are likely rebels from the restive Caucasus region, which includes Chechnya.

The suicide bombers were riding the rails at the time and deliberately detonated their explosives when the train doors opened after arriving at a stop.

U.S. President Barack Obama has condemned the rush hour bombings along Moscow’s Metro, offering his condolences to the Russian people.

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon says Canada “strongly condemns the cowardly attacks.”

He adds Canada also strongly supports the prosecution of those who are responsible.
