It’s been called the crime of the information age.
Hundreds of Calgarians made their way to public shredding events Saturday to ensure they won’t become the latest victims of identity theft.
Everyone was invited to bring unwanted documents containing personal information to one of three shredding stations, hosted by the city.
Calgary police, AMA Insurance and Shred It are working to make sure everyone knows how important it is to guard personal information.
Sgt. Dean Vegso says it’s something everyone needs to become more aware of.
“When criminals get access to information like your name, social insurance number and date of birth, they can use that to steal your identity.”
He says identity theft is one of the fastest growing problems in Canada.
If you missed the event this year don’t worry, the free event will be back next year.
