Calgary blasted by spring snow storm

Calgary police are out with a warning to drivers Thursday night, after a spring storm left roads wet, slippery and getting icy with falling temperatures.

Drivers are reminded to treat intersections with traffic lights that are out as four way stops.

Meanwhile, 660 Meteorologist David Spence says the snow will taper with some overnight clearing, but the wind will still be an issue.

There may even be enough of an accumulation of snow in the city that Calgarians will be shovelling out Friday morning.

Enmax was also dealing with several problems including different transmission issues that led to outages at two northeast substations.

Fifty-one thousand customers were without power for about an hour and some other customers in the city were in the dark because of downed power lines.

And at Calgary International, more than two dozen Air Canada flights were cancelled when the power went out around 6:00 p.m. Power has since been restored.

With wind gusts of more than 90 km/h it was up to pilots to decide whether or not to fly. Travellers were being advised to expect delays and to check with their airline before heading out.

Airlines are now working to get back on track with flights in and out of YYC.
