Calgary’s urban sprawl affects emergency response times

Calgary is a fast-expanding urban centre and many see that growth as a good thing, but it can create problems for emergency responders.

Calgary police spokesman Kevin Brookwell tells 660News as the city grows and the population increases, if the police numbers don’t keep pace there will be fewer patrol units that are able to respond to calls.

He says they have a goal of getting to priority-one calls within seven minutes and so far they’ve been able to meet that on a city-wide average.

Brookwell says if their police-to-population ratio doesn’t keep up, non-priority calls will end up having longer wait times by hours or even days.

But he says priority-one calls will never be compromised.
