Bomb scare over in the downtown core

A bomb scare snarled traffic for a couple of hours in Calgary’s downtown core this afternoon.

Calgary police say a suspicious package left underneath a loading dock at Fifth Avenue Place turned out to be construction material.

However, Duty Inspector Chris Butler says the construction material was bound and looked like a bomb, but it’s not clear if that was the intent.  Police are now looking for the individual who dropped off the package, to figure out if there was any criminal intent behind it.

Police say there were informed of a suspicious package apparently tossed underneath a loading dock at Fifth Avenue Place in the 200 block of 4th Avenue southwest at around noon.

The area was cordoned off for a couple of hours, and the first two floors of Fifth Avenue Place were evacuated as a precaution.

The bomb scare created a traffic nightmare as it closed off several streets in the area, including the 4th Avenue flyover.
