A reminder from the province to keep away from the Calgary weir this long weekend.
The man-made dam downstream from St. George’s Island, near the Calgary Zoo, has currents strong enough to capsize a boat or drag a swimmer under.
Erin Carrier with Alberta Environment tells 660News the weir is getting some construction work done which is expected to calm water in the area.
The province is asking anyone who might be using the Bow River near the weir’s refurbishing to be safe.
Eventually this area is intended to improve river safety, but in the meantime, the construction is still causing some hazards and risks to users.
Weir construction is expected to be completed in 2012.
