14th annual ALS fundraiser in Calgary this weekend

Calgarians will be lacing up for the Betty’s Run and Walk for ALS Sunday.

In it’s 14 years, the event has raised $3.5-million for research and support.

Volunteer Lindsay Schalin tells 660News that ALS is a crippling, neuromuscular disease.

“Your brain and your muscles stop sending and receiving messages, so slowly your body shuts down.”

She says people can live two to five years with ALS, although there are cases where people live longer.  Overall, it’s a very quick, devastating and sad disease.

Registration for the fundraising event starts at 9:00 a.m. Sunday at North Glenmore Park.

Participants can choose either the five-mile run or the five-kilometre walk.
